Boom Festival launches DVD

Boom Festival launches DVD
“We Are All” is a DVD edition featuring some of the highlights that make Boom a unique worldwide event.
At the beginning of 2008 Boom Festival released a book. Now, after its August 2008 edition, Boom launches another independent culture piece, this time in the form of a DVD. This unique worldwide event received The Greener Festival Award 2008 and the additional merit prize “Outstanding”, awarded to only eight events worldwide.
The “We Are All” DVD is about Boom Festival 2008. It consists of two documentaries, one short film and more than ten Boom Web TV journalistic pieces. The “We Are All” DVD is a numbered and limited edition. It will however be distributed all over the world through a network of specialist shops, either through the Web or at traditional and cultural retail shops.
One of the documentaries (also called “We Are All”) is a 55 minute long portrait of Boom´s public, artistic areas, multidisciplinary aspects and multiculturalism, as well as the sustainability projects of Boom´s 2008 edition.
“Boom Doing It” is a documental perspective on facts and episodes that took place during Boom 2008´s construction phase. It is a humane and sincere view about what goes on during the production of Boom Festival.
The DVD also contains Boom Web TV press pieces exploring contemporary activist content or specific Boom related issues such as the project “Your Oil is Music” or Boom´s reutilization of Rock in Rio materials.
Lastly, the French film producers Marc Roberts and Hervé Jakubowlcz created the short film “A Quiet Place” as a kind of satiric take on the dance experience at Boom Festival. This duo has been part of the production team of unique films such as “Munique”, “Babel” or “Asterix at the Olympics”.
This DVD is Boom´s most recent contribution to independent, intercultural and multidisciplinary culture, with a focus on cutting edge environmentally sustainable practices.

Boom Festival: Winner Of The Greener Festival Award 2008

The award is based on a questionnaire which covers event management, travel and transport plans, CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, fair trade, waste management and recycling, water management and noise pollution. Points are awarded for festivals which can show an active plan to promote public transport, reduce on-site waste, recycle and compost wherever possible, re-use water and use sustainable power.
Festivals are expected to have a coherent environmental policy and the organisers have environmental auditors who visit as many festival sites as possible to assess how festivals implement their plans. In total, thirty one festivals have won the award.
Just six festivals - including Boom Festival – further received the ultimate distinction of ‘outstanding’ from the organisers.
We thank all those who contributed to this award by demonstrating environmental citizenship while at Boom Festival. This prize belongs to all of us!
Here are some of the facts that contributed to Boom’s distinction:
- 20,000 portable ashtrays were given at the gates;
- 45.000 litres of used vegetable oil were used, avoiding the emission of 117.000 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere;
- 200.000 litres of water were intentionally evaporated – meaning that not even a liter of water used in Boom showers went to waste;
- 1 million 200 thousand litres of water are being stored in a man made lake for treatment with aquatic plants such as Typha sp, Eichornia sp or Azolla sp;
- 106.5 cubic metres of excrements did not need to be transferred to the local water treatment station for chemical based processing;
- 42.000 kg of organic waste were collected from the 17 restaurants at Boom and are currently undergoing a composting process;
- In six months time, about 20.000 kg of compost should become available for use as an organic agricultural fertilizer;
- 59.000 kg of human excrements were taken from the compost toilets and will also be treated through a worm based composting process resulting in about 30.000 kg of organic compost;
- Materials from other events (Rock in Rio Lisbon and the Amadora International Comic Strip Festival) were collected and re-used by Boom: in total 6 456 kg of plastic, 8 950 kg of metals, 77 kg of paper and 36 822 kg of wood were re-used, resulting in the non-emission of 167.04 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere;
- Around 3.000 people used the Boom Bus (Boom's public transport service).

Neither MySpace Nor Facebook: Boom Is Not Into It
We are not fans of MySpace. We understand, however, that it is a very useful tool for artists, be they musicians, DJs or producers, to promote themselves. But Booms place on the Internet is just one, its official website (www.boomfestival.org), which is completely independent from all media corporations - MySpace belongs to News Corp, owned by the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch.
This website has become an easy target for grand advertising campaigns and invasion of privacy. The links below will give you a better idea of why our answer to MySpace is "Thanks, but No Thanks".
Facebook is another example of a website that began with the intention of bringing people together but quickly became an ego obsessed tool, suppressing our natural need for human contact and conforming to being just fertile ground for mass corporate campaigns. Facebook is nothing but an ode to Generation Me or Generation Look at Me (children of the 80s and 90s). And these are our reasons for saying "No to Facebook".
The (funny) saying goes "Never Trust a Hippy". We'd like to upgrade that to: "Never Trust a Boom MySpace" or "Never Trust Boom's Facebook"...
